LOVE ME A GOOD MOVIE
I’m reviewing movies (Monday Movies) and will share I absolutely love to curl up under an afghan with something to drink and watch a movie with my family, although alone works too. Besides reading or the beach, this is relaxing and entertainment to me. For two hours it’s nothing but me and the movie of the moment.
Sometimes the hardest part is finding a movie that looks good enough to spend the time watching. My plan for Monday Movies is to share what I thought of the movies I’ve recently watched to help my fellow watchers find movies worth spending the time to view.
The movies will rarely be current box offices flicks. I tend to think that it has gotten too expensive to see a movie at the theater. Think about it–a family of four going to see a movie could cost around $60, then add in the cost of snacks and drinks and the cost starts pushing $100.
Not good for a family that adheres to a budget. So we watch from home, which is more comfortable, snacks are abundant and we can chat about the movie if we want. Basically, these movies will just be my thoughts on movies that I and/or my family watched during recent weekends. And that’s why I’ve named this category “Monday Movies”. I watch movies during the weekends to relax and then will report my thoughts on Monday.
WHAT I’LL BE SHARING
I’ll be sharing movies that I’ve watched; letting you know what I think about them and who they might be suitable for. So, when you need some down time (which is an OK thing), pull up my post and check out my reviews.
DUMPLIN
A young adult movie centered around a small-town beauty pageant. Jennifer Aniston plays the mother (who I have trouble thinking of as a mom). She is a past pageant winner and is now the director for the said pageant.
Of course, like most pageants, this one is centered around the popular, pretty girls. Enter the unpopular, misfit girls who are persuaded, at the suggestion of Dumplin (played by Danielle McDonald), to also enter the pageant. Each are different shapes and sizes with very distinct personalities. Dumplin wants to show her Mom that she can be the daughter her Mom wants but she is going to put her own spin on the pageant.
What followers is the girls realizing who they are and learning to be OK with themselves. Each gets that across to their own families.
If you like country music, you’ll enjoy the soundtrack to this movie—lots of Dolly Parton, who is Dumplin’s favorite country artist. This is a decent family movie with a lesson thrown in for everyone to learn or be reminded about. I enjoyed this movie and may watch it again sometime. Thumbs up!
JUMANJI , WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE
With “The Rock” Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and many others, will keep you rollin. Ten minutes into this movie and I was hooked and when they reach the jungle, I was roaring out loud. Not something that is easy to make me do. I like clever innuendo or when something happens that I wasn’t expecting and this movie has both.
This is a fun, hilarious and action-packed flick that I think the whole family would enjoy. The innuendoes should be over most youngster’s heads while providing some good laughs for the adults and teens both.
Fun movie and the cast is spot on and well worth some down time to enjoy. Thumbs Up!
MANCHESTER BY THE SEA
I recently tried to watch this movie but I have to be honest; I only managed to get through about 30 minutes before I turned it off and found something else to do. It’s a slow moving movie, at least in the beginning and I found myself rolling my eyes and wondering when something might happen to make this better. I just couldn’t do it.
A movie needs to make me laugh, at least put a smile on my face or engage my mind to keep my interest. This movie did none of those things. I may go back and try again sometime, but for now this was a snooze fest for me.
Anyone else see it and feel the same or did you like it? Tell me if I just didn’t wait long enough for the movie to get better. No thumbs.
SPOTLIGHT
Based on the true story of Boston Globe’s reporting of molestation of kids by catholic priests. Plenty of talent in this movie; Michael Keaton, Stan Tucci, Mark Ruffalo and Rachel MacAdams to name just a few.
This movie is serious stuff as it is about a group of investigative reporters who have been assigned to look into the allegations of systemic child sex abuse in the Boston area by none other than……….Catholic priests.
“Spotlight” is the name of the group of reporters that was started sometime in the 1970’s and who decide among themselves what stories they will work on. When one of them comes across the possible story of priests molesting kids, they took on the investigation to find out if rumors were true.
This group is autonomous from the rest of the Globe reporters and can spend months doing their investigations before actually reporting anything. And that’s what this movie is about. How meticulous the investigating is and how they stick to what they believe,in order to bring the truth of the story out. They go so far as to sue the Catholic church to unseal court documents needed for the investigation.
A very interesting and yet scary movie at the same time, due to the topic. The movie does tend to run slow in parts, but it is worth the time to explain what is going on. Do they get all the evidence they need for the story? Watch and find out. Thumbs Up!
Well, there you have it–my first batch of movie reviews. Have you seen these? I’d be interested to know what you thought. Were they thumbs up or thumbs down for you. And if you haven’t seen these movies and are in need of some downtown, choose one of these and enjoy!
