This post is the third in a series that I am doing on our chakras which are invisible focal centers, in our bodies. These life force centers take in energy and blend that energy within us contributing to a good flow of energy through our body to keep us healthy and thriving.
These focal points of healing energy are called Prana or “vital life force.” To keep our chakras running at their optimum, we have to work on our mental, physical, emotional and spiritual selves. That is why learning about our chakras could help keep us feeling our best.
When any of our chakras are out of alignment, we may get physically sick. Or we could feel sluggish and just not quite right. We don’t know what is wrong, but we feel something is off. It is very likely one of your chakras.
Why do these energy centers matter? Because our chakras help determine and create how we will feel in our mind, body and soul. Each of our seven chakras are interconnected so when one is blocked it affects the other six chakras.
Kind of like your car’s transmission, radiator, carburetor and alternator. If one of these parts doesn’t work and do their part to help your car run smoothly, your car won’t work, no matter what you do.
Basics About Chakras
Chakra is sanskrit and means “wheel”. Every chakra is a vortez of swirling energy and there are seven major ones in our body. They start at the base of our spine and lead up to the crown of our head. For a more complete basic explanation of our chakras, see my guide on all the chakras. (click here)
Each chakra corresponds to different parts of our physical body (major organs and nerves) mentally, emotionally and our consciousness, all essential parts of our lives.
It’s essential for our well-being that each chakra be kept open and balanced rather than blocked. This post in my chakra series is about our heart chakra.

Practice Working With Your Chakras
Once you’ve had practice with accessing each of your chakras separately and then together, you’ll have a better understanding of your body as a whole. You’ll start to pick up on a blocked chakra fairly quickly then you’ll be able to determine how to align it again.
There are several ways to keep our chakras in good working order. Some of those ways are with meditation, yoga, spending time in nature and simply clearing out the clutter in our lives both mentally and physically. See post on “Simplifying Your Home”.
All About Our Heart Chakra
Our heart chakra is the link between our bottom three chakras and our top three. The heart chakra places love, peace and kindness for others and us above all else.
Facts about Our Heart Chakra
Location: Center of Chest
Element: Air
Color: Green
Physical: Thymus
Healing Crystals: Peridot, Malachite, Rose Quartz, Jade, emerald and Green Tourmaline
Essential Oils: Floral scents like rose, jasmine, ylang ylang or vetiver. Use pine or rosewood to help open your heart chakra.
Foods: green foods such as kiwi, pears, limes green apples and pears, asparagus, celery, broccoli, cucumbers, etc.
Affirmation: I forgive and love myself; I can let go of the past and I am loved.
Our heart chakra is important for giving and receiving love for ourselves and others. It has to do with our emotions, such as compassion and forgiveness to others and ourselves.
Are there past hurts or someone that we need to release in order to move forward? The heart chakra helps with our acceptance of others and ourselves just as we are. It helps with our joy and our gratitude, empathy and generosity and our ability to love unconditionally.
We are better able to have strong relationships with others; we feel an inner peace and are emotionally open. All these are things our heart chakra does when balanced. When aligned, we are in harmony with the world around us.
Chakras can become too open (excessive/overactive) or too closed/blocked (underactive/deficient). Deficient simply means there is not enough good energy flow through our system making us feel tired and sluggish. When our heart chakra is too open, we can become agitated and aggressive.
When we don’t acknowledge our feelings, whatever they may be, from anger to depression, we are not allowing good, healthy energy flow freely through our body. You may experience any number of the symptoms below when the heart chakra is out of alignment.
Ways to Align Your Heart Chakra
*Gratitude
*Healing Crystals
*Journaling
*Nature
*Meditate
*Self-Care
Gratitude
Each day stop and think of a few things that you are grateful for throughout your day. Use your journal for writing down these things.
The heart chakra also likes smiling at people, doing random acts of kindness and in general helping others feel good about themselves.
This will also raise your vibrations to sync better with the universe.
Healing Crystals
Have some of the crystals handy that I mentioned earlier. A crystal such as rose quartz (one of my favorites), jade or green aventurine helps to heal the heart chakra. You can carry one or two of these crystals in your pockets to rub throughout the day. Better yet, you can wear these crystals in some form of jewelry, like a bracelet.
Journal
Journaling helps your psyche because it’s a good way to work through challenges you may be having. And adding affirmations to your journal, for your heart chakra, will help unblock it.
Nature
Spend some time in nature and it’s even better if you add some friends to this idea. Lots of laughter and fun while outdoors does the heart chakra good.
Meditate
Spend some time meditating with your green crystals around you. While meditating, try and visualize a small green clockwise turning tornado in the middle of your chest. Visualize energy flowing through your body, unencumbered, so that it can flow freely through your heart chakra to help heal it.
Self-Care
Each of us should be following a self-care routine and leave the guilt behind from doing something for ourselves. No reason to feel guilty for doing something that makes you feel good about yourself. It’s good for you and your family and heart chakra will love you for it.
Final Thoughts On Our Heart Chakra
Something to remember is when one chakra is off, it can affect several others. That is why it’s a good idea to learn about each chakra.
Learn what affects it each chakra, then how each affects you, and finally what you need to do to realign each chakra.
As far as our heart chakra goes-it’s all about spiritual awareness, forgiveness and love, both for yourself and others. I know that for many it may be hard to love yourself, but that can be learned.
Be brave and learn how to love yourself and practice self-care for yourself. This goes a long way in keeping your heart chakra balanced and therefore helping yourself feel better, mind, heart and soul and spirit. It’s a win/win for you and your family!
Stay Awesome!
