Do you know about these five car safety gadgets? Driving is such an important part of our lives, I thought it might be a good idea to look at a few things that can make driving a bit safer for all of us. I choose five safety gadgets that I think are worth taking a second look at. Not everything will appeal to everyone, but there may be one or two items that will resonant with you or that you may not have heard of before.
Night Vision Glasses
I have a lot of trouble seeing to drive at night, especially if it’s raining. I can’t see much when an oncoming car’s headlights glare at just the right angle to blind me for a sec or two.
According to the National Safety Council, nighttime driving is 3x more dangerous than driving during daytime. Glare from oncoming traffic, reduced vision and bright lights affect millions of drivers every night. Wearing night vision glasses can dramatically reduce the risk involved in driving under low light, foggy or especially rainy conditions.
The specialized yellow tint provides 100% UV protection while enhancing contrast and clarity. This leads to less strain on your eyes which can cause drowsiness and migraines. Most of these glasses are lightweight and many are designed to fit easily over prescription glasses or they are also available in clip-ons. And if you don’t need glasses, you can easily find a pair of the night vision glasses to wear alone.
I have a pair that actually clip over my prescription glasses; and I make sure they are in my car, so they are there when I need them. They truly do make it much easier to see when I’m doing night driving. This is an item I was glad to find.
Roadside Safety Disc
This gadget is something I will be getting to keep in my car and I may get more than one. I’m actually a little surprised that someone hasn’t come out with this before now.
Any type of roadside emergency can leave you feeling helpless, and if the breakdown happens at dusk or at night it can be downright scary. A roadside safety disc is a more modern version of the road flare or florescent triangle that many of us may already have in our trunks. These discs can help keep you safe during a roadside emergency.
A safety disc can be seen by an oncoming motorist from over 5,000 feet away. Some have up to 9 flashing modes. You can set them on the ground at strategic places around your car or if you have one with a magnetic base, you can stick it on the back of your car. Next to your phone, this device could be your most important gadget if your car breaks down or you have an accident.
Digital Tire Pressure Gauge
Something I’m not good at is checking the air in my tires. For some reason I can’t seem to get the tire gauge to do what it is suppose to. So here is a gadget I may have to try. This gadget shows the tire pressure on an LCD screen and some also show temperature and battery voltage. Each tire gets a sensor that transmits the measurements to the control unit. If something is off, the unit will let you know. Sounds easy enough that even I may be able to use it.
Portable Car Jump Starter Kit
This is something that I think every car should have in the trunk and you should know how to use it. Especially if you are someone that forgets to turn their headlights off. That used to happen quite a bit to a friend of mine. It would be dark when he left for work in the morning, but daylight when he got to his office, so he would forget his headlights were on and come out at 5:00 to a dead car battery.
Having a jump starter kit would help if and when this might happen to you. And some of these kits come with a small air compressor (featured above) to use if your tire pressure is low.
Emergency Escape Tool
I have something like this but it’s not compact nor does it hang on my keychain. I keep my escape tool in the console between the front seats so I’ve often wondered if I would be able to get to it fast enough to use if needed. This gadget can be put on your keychain which should be very handy if needed.
Now if you don’t know what this gadget does, let me explain. When unfolded, one side of the gadget is a razor sharp cutter to use on a seatbelt if you are ever stuck in the car and can’t release the belt. The cutter should slice right through your belt so you can get out.
The other end is used to push against a window to shatter it—again if you are trapped in the car and unable to get out. God forbid any of us ever has to use it, but I’d rather have it handy than not have the tool if needed.
Well, there you have it—my suggestions of a few choice gadgets that would be good for any car owner to keep in their car. All fairly easy to use. Let me know what you think.
Till Later,
Cher
